Pixelstick LED Lightpainting Tool
Overview
Description
The Pixelstick LED Lightpainting Tool is a unique image enhancer that uses 200 RGB LEDs housed in an in a 73" "wand" that allows you "paint" images stored on an SD/HC card onto a digital photo during a long exposure at night.
The setup is simple: mount a DSLR or advanced point and shoot on a tripod and set it for an approximately 2 to 30 second exposure at night. A longer exposure will allow you to paint more. Lots of photographers have had fun making light trails with flashlights or strings of holiday lights at night. This is the advanced version of that except that you're painting specific images stored on an SD or SDHC card that fits in the Pixelstick's controller. There are pre-loaded patterns such as coloured ribbons in the controller, but you'll have the most fun with images you've generated in Photoshop or similar programmes. Paint a huge Mona Lisa in an archway in a park, fantasy beasts or waterfalls in unlikely places. Pixelstick can even increment through a series of images over multiple exposures, opening up light painting to the world of time lapse imaging, allowing for high quality animations.
The 73" LED housing joins to a perpendicular 15" handle allowing you to spin and pivot the unit. The Pixelstick ships with a flat, milky lens that provides good diffusion for the LED underneath. An optional flat frosted lens allows the individual LEDs to be seen more clearly, creating a scanline effect that's reminiscent of early video games. There's also an optional milky rounded lens provides maximum diffusion and beam spread that's ideal for painting colourful ribbons.
The Pixelstick runs on 8 separately purchased AA batteries (rechargeables recommended) and breaks down to 43" to fit into the included padded case with shoulder strap.
Features
Introducing Pixelstick
Pixelstick consists of 200 full colour RGB LEDs inside a lightweight aluminium housing. The mounted controller reads images from an SD card and displays them, one vertical line at a time, on the LEDs. Each LED corresponds to a pixel in the image. Load your SD card up with full colour, high fidelity images and watch pixelstick transform your long exposures forever
Surprisingly Simple
All you need is Pixelstick and a camera with a long exposure mode. The controller is easy to use - simply insert and SD card with images you've created or downloaded, set the camera to take a long exposure, select the image you want Pixelstick to display, and press the shutter release. The beauty of light painting is there's no wrong way to do it
Create and Animate
With Pixelstick, you can seamlessly insert any image into your long exposures. Pixelstick can even increment through a series of images over multiple exposures, opening up light painting to the world of time lapse, and allowing for animations of expanded scope and quality
