In 2007, Wes Phillips and Dale Backus founded SmallHD with an innovative approach that was unlike anything else at the time. Both men had been working in the film industry for a number of years, and when they entered Doritos’ Crash the Super Bowl contest in 2006, their low-budget commercial won them the prize money they needed to pursue their dream of creating something new.
After searching online for a portable monitor with HDMI-in and VGA-in capabilities but failing to find one with a decent price point and resolution, they decided to create what would become SmallHD's first product: The DP1.
