The Behringer K2 MKII Analog/Semi-Modular Synth is an enhanced version of the semi-modular analog synthesizer K-2, which is a clone of the renowned Korg MS-20. It retains the same desktop case as the original, allowing for rack mounting or installation in a Eurorack modular system. The MkII features both filter revisions of the MS-20, with the earlier model producing a rough resonance and the later model providing a cleaner sound.
New in the MkII
The MkII introduces some noticeable changes. The yellowish lettering and lines are now white. The oscillator section now includes two new toggle switches for VCO FM and hardsync activation. The pitch control of oscillator 2 has been extended, allowing for more diverse sounds. The patch panel has also been updated with a PWM CV input, enabling pulse width modulation, as well as a VCO 1+2 V/oct input for controlling the oscillators with Eurorack-compatible control voltages.
Remaining faithful to the original and improving upon it
The K-2 MkII maintains the essence of the original, featuring two analog oscillators with pulse-width modulation, a ring modulator, and a noise generator. These elements are processed by the charismatic high-pass/low-pass filter, imparting the distinctive sound of the K-2 MkII. The modulation sources include two envelopes (Hold-ADSR and Delay-AR) and a fast LFO with variable wave symmetry, all assigned to the oscillators and filters.
Signal processor
The K-2 MkII also includes a signal processor that can shape incoming audio signals into a bandpass sound, recognize the pitch, and generate envelope followers. These capabilities, along with the extensive patch field and added features such as an open sample & hold and an additional VCA, make the K-2 MkII a versatile tool for processing external sounds.
