The exaggerated depth makes for a narrower beam than a standard umbrella while still retaining some of an umbrella's wrap around qualities; but with a defined edge. Additional control can be achieved by fine-tuning the "focus" of the beam by varying the flash head's position along the umbrella's shaft.
