The original a1 stood out in Sony's lineup by combining high-quality photography and video features in a single, powerful camera body. The second version builds on this concept, enhancing several key features for the benefit of professional hybrid image-makers.

The original a1 already delivered strong imaging performance, and the a1 II improves upon this with upgraded BIONZ XR processing, an AI processing unit, more powerful 8.5-stop IBIS, and a remarkable 50MP stacked BSI CMOS sensor inherited from its predecessor. These features enable a continuous shooting rate of up to 30 fps, expandable sensitivity ranging from ISO 50-102400, and an impressive dynamic range of 15 stops. Furthermore, the a1 II incorporates the Pre-Capture and Speed Boost functions first introduced in the a9 III, enhancing its speed capabilities.

The a1 II's focusing system has also undergone significant upgrades, featuring an AI Processing Unit and improved subject detection and tracking compared to its predecessor. The phase-detection AF system includes 759 points, covering approximately 92% of the sensor area, and offers autofocus down to -4 EV at f/2. The camera's subject tracking and detection capabilities have also been enhanced, with a 30% improvement in detecting human eyes and a 50% improvement in detecting animal eyes.

While the core video specifications of the original a1 were already advanced, the a1 II refines its video recording capabilities with additional modes and features. It incorporates Dynamic Area Stabilization and supports a true 24.00 frame rate for a cinematic look.
